There was a farmer, and he lived in great harmony with his neighbors in a village not far from a beautiful mountainous area.

One day while working in his fields, a farmer noticed that his old horse was sick. Rather than keeping him to work the rest of his days, he let the horse go free into the mountains. His neighbors came by and said, "We're so sorry that your horse is gone, you must be very worried that you don't have your horse to help you reap the crops. It will likely be devastating to your ability to make money."

The farmer responded, "Perhaps."

A few days later, the horse came back, well again, and brought with him a number of healthy young horses. His neighbors again came by and told him what good fortune he had.

He responded, "Perhaps."

The next day, the farmer asked his son to train the new horses, and while doing this, a horse threw him, and the son had a very serious broken leg, which resulted in difficulty working. The villagers again bemoaned the farmer's misfortunes.

The farmer again responded, "Perhaps."

A few months later, war broke out, but due to the son's difficulty walking, he was deferred from the draft. The villagers told the farmer he and his son must be relieved.

The farmer responded, "Perhaps."

As the war slowly came to a close, the villagers told the farmer he must be concerned that his son could not work as hard as the other men, due to his difficulty walking.

Again, the farmer responded, "Perhaps."

As the men were returning from the war, many of them had mental health issues and PTSD. The villagers told the farmer that he must be happy that his son was not inflicted with these concerns and, despite his disability, could still work.

"Perhaps."

Perspective? Positivity? Openness to all outcomes?

Perhaps.
